Tech Friday: Teach Your Patrons Internet Safety

Here’s a good one from over at WebJunction: Internet Safety, A lesson plan to teach patrons basic Internet safety, how to deal with spam, and how to prevent identity theft. Chris Magnusson, and Deborah Johnson put together a nice outline for putting on your own Internet Safety Class.

Teaching your patrons to keep their computers safe and virus free will help reduce spam. With more than 400,000 Machines being used by crackers & spammers now, we need to make sure we spread the word.

    Yeah, that’ll work
    It takes 45 minutes to convince users the email address is not http://www.yahoo.com and another half hour to make them stop typing their mail address in the address bar.

    Who cares if someone spams your free email account, you get what you pay for. I refuse to help patrons enter their credit card information or bank account numbers anywhere but after that they are on their own.

    I’m sure this is a good idea
    But I get an image of my patrons who twitch like a fish on a line whenever the screen blinks at them and I have to peel them off the ceiling with a broom handle.

    The intricacies of phishing versus hacking might be, um … counterproductive?
