Rather than traveling the galaxy defending the universe from dark forces, Superman may soon arrive in your hometown in a very pedestrian way.
As part of the Grounded story line that kicks off in July with issue No. 700 of DC Comics’ Superman series, the Man of Steel will walk across the USA to reconnect with the everyday people he is committed to protecting.
The story may be fictional, but many of the places and people that Superman will visit are real. DC Comics is asking readers to write in and campaign for their towns and residents to be depicted in the 13-issue Superman series.
Series writer J. Michael Straczynski and DC’s editorial team will select the featured locations.
“Because Superman is a symbol of hope, I wanted folks to have a chance to bring Superman into their town, into their neighborhood, in the pages of the book,” Straczynski says.
Seems like a lot of issues
I’m a bit surprised at the 13 issue run. Seems long for something like this, but if they do it right it could be interesting. (For instance, if he only goes around as Kent or even better adopts some disguises and is having some sort of issue of self-confidence).
Not really
Comics are what? 22 pages? It’s not like you can fit a lot of locations in one issue (unless you’re doing one or two panels each for places), which means Superman is going to walk across the country and hit about 15-20 towns.
Right, but typically
Right, but typically something like this would be either a separate issue/mini-series or perhaps made into a graphic novel format. I mean, if the publication of Superman is still monthly, this is over a year for this storyline. If done right, it’ll blend right in. If it gets too hokey that’s a heck of a long slog for a comic.
I’d expect it to be about 4 places in a six issue mini-series myself. Of course, I haven’t been following Superman so I can’t say if Straczynski’s style will do well with this storyline. I’m only familiar with Straczynski through some of the Babylon 5 stuff.
It just smells a bit like something created in a marketing department. It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out.
Superman can fly.
I don’t know how fast he flies or if he needs to sleep, but I guess he can “walk” across America, rescue Timmy from the well, stop a gang turf war, help a lonely kid realize he’s special, help Mrs. Johnson bake some pies, fix that flat for Sue, help President Obama fix that pesky oil leak, win a wet t-shirt contest on the Jersey Shore, sit in the audience on Conan’s new show,….
and fly back to Metropolis in between, as needed, to battle Lex Luthor or whomever. It’s not like he can’t excuse himself from the table once in a while to fight evil…
can they have Superman cross paths with Bill Bixby?
and then play the “lonely man” theme… that would be great.
it’s a comic, but they could put a code that links to the music when you scan it with your phone or web camera.
