Jaclyn writes “Today’s Straight Dope article deals with the history of public libraries.”
Funny, the person asking the question “googled the hell out of” it and didn’t think to ask a librarian. What’s that tell you?

A few things, actually…
But it primarily communicates what I take to be an uncontroversial point, namely that the many values of libraries and librarians are not clear in the minds of our users. Every time I am confronted with the “Goodness, why?” look when I tell folks that I want to be an academic librarian, I wonder what we librarians can do to better market ourselves and to educate the public on what it is that we do.
We might do well to disabuse folks of the notion that not all librarians are bibliophiles who read all day long. That is, when not shushing loud patrons.

Well, but that begs the question. If we could read all day and get paid for it, how many of us would jump at that option? Or, in new terms, how many of us get paid to wander the internet all day?
