S&S joins 200+ publishers in exodus from OverDrive

David H. Rothman writes “Just 477 publishers now use Content Reserve, the besieged distribution arm of OverDrive–a steep decline from more than 700 publishers back in March 2004 and even fewer than the 531 counted in late June of ’03. Among those no longer at OverDrive, apparently? Simon & Schuster. It would be a shame if OverDrive went under, given the beautiful library e-book sites it’s helped to create. But some serious questions do exist about the company’s business model and its commitment to a wide variety of e-books, or at least those from the smallest publishers, which in some cases must now spend $300 a year on storage costs to deal with OverDrive directly. More at TeleRead.”
