Sorting out the treasures and the trash

Anonymous Patron writes “Interesting little report, “Sorting out the treasures and the trash,” from Steve Duin, reporter at The Oregonian on his trip to WonderCon and The California International Antiquarian Book Fair.

“Ninety percent of all books are spiraling down in price,” noted Bill Leone, a bookseller from Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. “The other 10 percent — the high spots — are doing just the opposite. That’s because the Internet has determined which books are truly scarce.”

In the shadow of the high spots, however, there is clearly an emphasis on long-term relationships — members of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America subscribe to a code of ethics that would paralyze many comic dealers — rather than short, quick scams.”
