Some Words Of Wisdom For Aspiring Authors: Quit now

So quit deluding yourself. If this column has discouraged you, good. Give up writing and get a life. Reconnect with your family and friends and make a real contribution to humanity. For those of you who have not been deterred, God help you, you’re a writer. And your life will be full of disappointment, humiliation frustration and depression.

    Most of this is bitter and hopelessly narrow regarding what constitutes “reading” and “writing.” When it’s not it’s the kind of black humor funny only real life can conjure.

    The “Long Tail” of sales
    “The Long Tail” is an article by Chris Anderson in an October 2004 Wired magazine article which described the niche strategy of businesses, such as Amazon.com, that sell a large number of unique items, each in relatively small quantities. I’m not sure this author understands how radically this changes the publishing business.

    Most authors sell only a few thousand books. As many high school athletes aspire to the Olympics or professional sports, only a very few make it. So it is with many authors. They remain high school athletes. Not a bad place, but if you continue to compare yourself to major league players, you will always be disappointed.

    Many people can’t afford to quit their job to become a full time writer. In a way, this is a good thing. Those who are dedicated will find the time to write around their job and family obligations. Others, dialtantes, will fall away.

    With self-published books today, they can be added to the amazon.com and other booksellers, and you can write your own reviews, and get your family and friends to shill for you too.

    If you want to write a book, but then contribute nothing to the marketing of the book, you will indeed have few sales.
