Snakes at Large in Library

teaperson writes “Quick, call Rikki Tikki Tavi — a three-foot long python is believed to be lurking in Cohasset, MA’s Paul Pratt Memorial Library. While the town police chief is assuring the public that the snake is merely scary and not dangerous, a library trustee is worried that the snake may be out in the cold (instead of hiding inside).”

    I have a feeling someone at the Our World Museum is so fired.

    There was actually a small snake once in one library I use to work in. Some members of the staff stood around it trying to figure out if it was poisonous or not. Fortunately this was before the library had opened.

    No big deal. I have a snake den on my property. You should try walking across my backyard in about mid-March. The ground moves…

    It might have come in with the mail. That happened to someone I know. They received a box of freight from somewhere, and it had a live snake in it. In this case, the snake was not native to where it was shipped. That could be a problem.

    When I was in college, someone let a domestic mouse loose in the library, apparently hoping to scare the librarian. Didn’t work. She walked over and picked him up. She gave him to me, and I took him home at Christmas time and gave him to my mom as a pet. Mom thought he was just the coolest thing.

    We used to have a “pet” Prairie King Snake in the children’s area of the library. It used to take “walks” every morning before the library opened. One morning it wandered off and was loose in the library for about a week. It turned up in the bottom of a movie projector box. After seven years in its native south Oklahoma, it moved with me to NW Indiana and resided 10 more years in the display case in the corner of the circulation desk. Feeding time was always a crowd pleaser!
