Small-town libraries studied for Internet access

Someday in the near future, small-town Alberta may join the information revolution through the local library. With the $300 million Alberta SuperNet about to bring modern communication to 420 Alberta communities, a group from Three Hill is proposing to use small-town libraries as the access point for high-speed Internet service.

Under the proposal, the local library would be the link to the on-line world, providing high-speed cable and fibre optics hookups necessary for teleconferencing and other functions requiring broadband Internet access. For example, a business owner in a smaller community like Three Hills would be able to teleconference with anyone in the world using equipment and an Internet portal at the local library. Or someone could take an on-line university class and participate in a real-time group discussion without having to leave their community.”
