Help is on the way for the public library in poverty-ravaged Robbins, in danger of closing for lack of money.
The library board in Skokie — more than 30 miles to the north — held a special session Friday after board members read about the plight of the south suburb’s William Leonard Public Library in the Chicago Sun-Times and decided to help.
“We discussed what we could do to [help] the Robbins library to be able to serve the community that needs it so desperately,” said Diana Hunter, president of the Skokie Library Board.
The board agreed to donate at least three months’ worth of proceeds from the library’s used-book sales, and some board members also plan to make personal donations, Hunter said.

“Coatney said the library had run out of cash and would need about $70,000, or the library would close at the end of August.”

Politica Enablers
For the past fifteen years, there has been a steady roar from politicans against taxes. Although costs have gone up and communities have grown, for years politicians have taken the easy road of cutting taxes or refusing to rasie taxes to needed levels to maintain services.
Now, when the silliness of these knee-jerk anti-tax crusades are shown by reducing services, enablers want to demonstrate that the tax cutters were right.
I’m sorry such a valuable resources is closing. But only by closing can the foolishness of the anti-tax and anti-library politicians be shown, and new politicans be able to run against old, worn out ideas.
The problems of library funding needs to be fixed. This only helps maintain the problem, and keep the annual disaster-in-waiting from occuring. Soon the people who manufactured this crisis will be forgotten, and their toes will no longer be held to the fire.
Sigh. Let’s all cut some taxes some more. Let’s cut library services. Friendly people will keep the basic services going, and the politicians won’t be held responsible when the donations stop.
