Should SMU accept Dubya’s presidential library?

Slate has George Bush Goes to College, By David Greenberg that’s sure to solicit a knee-jerk comment or two. Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, the alma mater to Laura Welch Bush, is in an uproar over its bid to become the permanent home of the George W. Bush Presidential Library. Three times in three weeks the faculty has met to debate the subject.

He takes a quick look at both sides.

    I couldn’t get past the first sentence without laughing. The article is full of hyperbole and lies.

    A presidential library is a boon to any university, SMU would certainly do well by having the G.W. Bush Library.

    No one cares what the faculty has to say. There are hundreds of applicants for every faculty position. If they are that upset about it quit and get a job outside academia, unless you feel you don’t have any marketable skills.

    No matter how much the faculty may wish it to be so there is no ethical concern about erecting a library for the study of anyone’s works, life, and career. I can surely say a Hitler library would be beneficial and not have any ethical concern because librarians – and indeed NARA does have a librarian or two on staff for presidential libraries- can and (sometimes) do present factual information without political distortion.

    There is no shrine to Reagan, nor will there be a shrine to Bush and to suggest otherwise is poor jouralism and absurdity. Some journalists can report facts without hyperbole and political distortion. The one that penned this article is unfortunately not one of those select few.
