School library book too sexual for grandmother’s custom

I think this is the first Gramma Knows Best story I’ve read. A book in the Acton Middle School library has one Granbury grandmother seeing red. The book, “Detour for Emmy,â€? by Marilyn Reynolds, recounts the choices that the sexually active title character must make after an unprotected encounter with her boyfriend that leads to teen pregnancy.
Caroline Sanders’ 13-year-old granddaughter recently brought the book home from the library.
“I read a couple of pages, and it talks very vividly about the sexual encounters of a 15-year-old,” she said. “Maybe I am living in the dark ages, but I don’t think it is appropriate for a 13-year-old to read that.”

    …she’s not my grandmother. I probably would’ve made given the poor old girl a heart attack, considering I was reading VC Andrews (Flowers in the Attic) by the time I was 11. I have a very vivid memory of reading it in the back seat of the car while on a trip with my parents. No, I don’t get carsick when I read in the car! I started reading Stephen King by the time I was 13.

    My high school went from grades 8-12 and I remember going to the library and the VC Andrews books were behind the Librarian’s (yes, she had an MLS) desk. I also remember when I asked to sign them out she asked if my mother knew what I was reading. I said “Of course”. Which may or may not have been a little white lie. *G* I honestly don’t know if mum knew or not, I certainly didn’t make a point of letting her know and she never said anything to me about it. *shrug*

    Let’s just keep those post-puberty kids in the dark about the consequences of their actions. I mean this book talks about pregnancy and other things that can happen to you after you have sex, instead of just being a straight sex manual – we can’t have that. We’re only to hear about hot boobies and throbbing penii.

    I mean as long as they never read about other teens having sex, they’re be no reason for them to engage in sex, right? Right!?

    Sounds like a plan to increase the child birthrate to me.

    This is interesting. I’d not known until recently that people didn’t read in cars due to this condition…. I recently was on a trip with friends, and they told me they couldn’t read while we were driving… I of course cranked thru a book and a part while talking to them intermittenly. I’d never considered that some people might not be able to do that.

    I work in a profession where a majority of college educated individuals fall down and worship any stack of pages wrapped in cardboard with the same fervor that any Christian does with the Bible. But because this woman is concerned about a young girl reading about another young girl getting pregnant, when we live in a society that ignores so many young girls already getting pregnant, because she worries, she lives in the dark ages. Yeah okay.

    Okay . . . here’s a clue:

    So many young women are getting pregnant because people like you and George Bush forbid them to know how to avoid it.

    Check my quotations file on sexuality; go to the section with material from Judith Levine’s book; pay particular attention to the paragraph that points out how backwards and barbaric Europe teaches comprehensive sex-ed, does not have a higher incidence rate of young-adults having sex, but does have a much lower rate of teen-pregnancies.

    Facts are so inconvenient when they don’t support your prejudices, aren’t they?

    This isn’t about sex-ed Nellis. No class is going to prevent teen pregnancy if the culture and atmosphere outside that room is all sex all the time.

    This is also about a 13 year old. Someone who can’t drink, drive, own a gun, or vote. She knows she can’t do any of those things and she knows if she tries she’ll pay a penalty. But sex and making babies? Hey, if it happens it happens right?
