School libraries not stacking up

BBob COx sends this article from The Tennessean.com about the sorry state of school libraries in Tennessee.

“Public school libraries across the Midstate are failing, national and state experts say, despite the fact that all the districts exceed state standards.

According to the experts, Midstate collections are too old and too small, and that could be one reason for lagging test scores. A Tennessean survey of public school libraries in Middle Tennessee shows the average library has 19 books for every student, with the average book about 16 years old.

But librarians have their backs to the stacks. They say they’re doing the best they can with limited or nonexistent funds and little state leadership.”
