Greenville Online Reports No school libraries in the county have smoke detectors because they aren’t required by code, although such facilities contain large amounts of combustible materials and children, officials supervising Greenville County School District’s building program said.
“It’s surprising, especially considering that’s the most volatile place in the whole school because of the books and where the computers are,” said Deb Williams, treasurer of the Mountain View PTA and a parent of two students there. “That’s where most of the money in that school is, in that media center.”
Only four of the county’s 97 schools are equipped with sprinklers, though all newly constructed schools will be.
Grant monies?
There has got to be a grant for something like this. Does these schools actually need smoke detectors as part of integrated systems (sometimes that is the case)? Could local individuals purchase commercial, off the shelf hardware to donate?
Re:Grant monies?
I’m surprised that the insurance company doesn’t require detectors if the school district wants its book collection covered. Now, if the district is self-insured (and many do this) that’s a whole other matter.
