Savannah’s epilogue

Bob Cox shares with us an AP Article that says ten years after publication of the gossipy Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, this coastal town still attracts a tidal wave of tourists – and their money. Before Midnight, Savannah mostly attracted Southern daytrippers who swung through to see the city’s parklike squares, marble monuments and antebellum homes. Afterward, when copies of the book became as much a travel accessory as sunscreen, tourists swarmed in from around the world.

    The Shining

    I can relate… I grew up in Stephen King country (where, unlike the deep south, nothing is ever secret.) When The Shining came out, it was modeled after the Mount Washington Hotel at Bretton Woods (though I think it was actually filmed someplace in Colorado). Whenever I was at the library, or the local book store, people no one recognized would flock in and ask for directions up there… People used to ask where poor Mr. King lived, but that was generally kept quiet.

    Books are a great boon to the small local economies, though often overlooked.

    The Shining was based on the Stanley hotel in Colorado not on some hotel in New England. I saw a Biography episode about Stephen King that told how he took a vacation to Colorado and got the idea for “The Shining”. If you go to the web page of the hotel and click on history they verify this information. http://www.stanleyhotel.com
