For the first time libraries can have access to the most comprehensive electronic collection of South African scientific and scholarly journals in the world. Most of these journals are peer reviewed and are accredit by the South African Department of Arts, Science and Culture. At present 131 titles are available and the number of titles is growing steadily. Sabinet Online’s SA ePublication product was formally launched on 4 June 2002.
Initially this service focuses on making journals, published in South Africa, available online. However, we are at present in the process of negotiating with Publisher from all over Africa to participate.

Since the start of the project during the beginning of 2001 four hundred and forty (440) scientific and scholarly journals were identified for this project by the academic and commercial client base of Sabinet Online in South Africa. Up to now we have approached 290 publishers/editors for permission to place their journals on the web – more than 77% responded positively.

Licensing options

Libraries can subscribe to either all the journals in the SA ePublications service, or only to certain pre-defined collections of journals. Subscription to individual journals is unfortunately not available. The pricing is based on the bundled principle whereby a subscriber must take all titles in the various licensing options. The prices for the collections are available on request and are for unlimited online access per library or
campus.

The following subscription options are available:

· Full SA ePublications Service – all titles in the service – 131 titles
at present
· Medical and Health Collection – 18 titles
· Science, Technology and Agriculture Collection – 21 titles
· Social Sciences and Humanities Collection – 52 titles
· Business and Finance Collection – 19 titles
· Religion Collection – 13 titles
· Law Collection – 10 titles

Libraries may subscribe to either the full SA ePublications Service, or one (or more) of the Special collections.

Subscribers to the full SA ePublications Service will also get access to the only comprehensive database of indexed and abstracted South African journal articles – extracted from more than 900 journals containing approximately 440 000 articles. Library holdings are attached to most of the titles without electronic full text, making it easy to trace the document for ILL purposes.

Subscribers to the Special Collections will get access to the full text from 2001 onwards and the author, title, subjects, keywords and abstracts of articles from 1984+

Subscribers will benefit from

· A flexible licensing option
· Perpetual access
· Availability of archive
· License Agreement based on the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) template
· Generous access permission.

Evaluation of the options

On our web page (http://journals.sabinet.co.za/collections), you will find information such as:

· A list of titles and their scopes
