RFID is all it’s Cracked up to be

Fang-Face writes “Getting back to the RFID as the handy, dandy, ID card of the future, Workingpermit.com has an article about a security consultant cracking the technology. He hacked and cloned RFID chips. This probably doesn’t have many ramifications for library services, but governments are infamous for rushing half-baked programs into use, and North America is likely to become a feeding frenzy of electronic identity theft once we all get Borgified with implanted ID cards.”

    No RFID for me
    I just got a new US Passport and I thought it was to have an RFID chip. The website describes the feature. I don’t think mine has one. It does not have any logos and there is no note that I can avail myself of the special lanes for RFID passports.

    Not that it would matter to me as I was registered with the PORTPASS program with US ICE that required a biometric measurement of my hand. It gave me a special card with my information encoded on a magnetic strip so when I came back into the country I could go to a special line, insert my card, put my hand in a reader and be on my way through Immigration in seconds. This was sweet, especially when the three hundred people in line gave me dirty looks.

    I don’t care if there is an RFID chip in my passport. Heck I don’t care if there is one in my arse if it speeds things up.
