    Whoever, wrote this article obviously hasn’t been inside a library in the last 5 years. Also, “It costs the library service about £3 to lend a book.” where did they get that figure?

      The total cost of the library system is 1 billion pounds and they circulated a little over 300 million books. The dipshit author did the math without figuring in all the other services a library provides.

      So,

      reference services must be free
      the reference collection (which does not circulate) must be free
      the electronic databases must be free
      internet access must be free
      adult and children’s programming must be free
      community services must be free
      building maintenance must be free
      building utilities must be free

      in order for you to accept his £3 per lent book figure.

        These are not services they are overhead and should be counted against the cost of circulating a book. So if you don’t like the £3 what number would you suggest?

          No Idea
          I’d have to really crunch the numbers for their library system, because you’d have to take the 1 billion pounds, subtract all the other services they provide, and then divide by 300 million.

          I’m not willing to put that much effort into a response to an LISNews blog post.
