Reassigning School Librarians

Ever wonder why school media specialists had to first be licensed to teach in an appropriate subject area? In Washington State, the matter is being put to the test. In the schools of Bellevue, secondary school librarians are being reassigned to classroom teaching and are being replaced with aides at the middle schools and high schools.

    Most teachers become school librarians to get OUT of the classroom grind.

    My teacher husband and most of our educator friends would rather work for crap pay in gang territory then with Bellevue in any way, shape, or form. For a ritzy district with a budget most Seattle area schools could only wish for they keep doing these things because they do a lot of things “top-down” style to raise standardized test scores on the cheap (A lot of the people who actually believe the WASL works in the Greater Seattle area live in the Eastside Redmond/Bellevue/Issaquah/Kirkland suburbs.) and they screw teachers – especially subject specialists – along the way. They had a strike about teacher autonomy and control over their own classroom about 2 years ago over this type of management. You’ll notice the Superintendent there is a interim one.

    On the upside, if they can’t get school librarians then maybe I should just take my youth-oriented MLS, get that teaching cert from one of the three area schools that offers a library media endorsement and start looking into schools – other then Bellevue.
