Reading and Radio…A Good Combination

Georgia Lomax is a librarian who has been very successful with a novel approach to getting people involved with literature. Now she’ll be receiving her just rewards.

In 1993, Lomax got the idea for a radio/library partnership featuring a live call-in show and discussions of regional literature in Montana. That effort caught the attention of the ALA and in 1997, the project became “Storylines America” and, supported by the ALA and funded by the NEH, debuted in the Northwest and Southwest, followed by series focusing on California, the coastal Southeast, the Midwest and New England. The 13-week series, still funded with grants from the NEH, are call-in discussion programs aired on public radio.

Lomax is now director of the Pierce County Library, in Washington state, and will soon be awarded the Allie Beth Martin award at the next ALA in New Orleans. Story from King’s County News .
