rohart writes \”Pontifex Maximus of the white supremacist group, World Church of the Creator, Matt Hale was arrested Wednesday for plotting to have the judge presiding over the church\’s copyright infringement case killed. Hale was taken into custody as he arrived at a contempt hearing relating to the copyright case. CNN Story Here.
Hale and his supporters are well known to many in the library community for their booking of public meeting rooms to hold forums on white supremacy/extremism issues. Several libraries have denied Hale the use of public meeting space because several previous meetings have turned violent when demonstrators and church members clash. Just shy of his law license (Hale has his JD, but has been denied a license in Illinois and Idaho), Hale has often successfully sued libraries, on first amendment grounds, to gain access to public space.
Claiming to have over 80,000 members world-wide, groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center who monitor WCOTC, estimate that there are probably fewer than 200 active members. Hale faces 30 years in prison for the charges. Observers are predicting that Hale\’s imprisonment will almost certainly signal the end of WCOTC as members align themselves with other white extremist organizations. \”
