Publishers Call for a Halt to Google Print

By way of Bernie Sloan, today’s The Chronicle of Higher Education reports:

The Association of American Publishers has asked Google to stop scanning copyrighted books published by the association’s members for at least six months while the company answers questions about whether its plan to scan millions of volumes in five major research libraries complies with copyright law.

The group raised a fuss about the project last month.

Given Google’s track record of removing content — and how libraries are handing over the reigns to corporations when it comes to preserving and presenting information — cases like these will be interesting to watch unfold.
