Public libraries have massive support but are challenged to do better as annual stats explode myths

The Resourceshelf pointed the way to A Report Out Of England by the MLA, the government’s strategic advisory body for libraries. The MLA said the figures highlighted the massive popularity of public libraries and their success in adapting to change in many places. But it added that delivery needs to continue to evolve to keep pace with social trends, not least to ensure that a full range of services, including the book stock, can reach new users and a bigger proportion of the population.

“Libraries have a comprehensive book stock that is freely available and must keep up to date and be relevant to peoples’ needs. Books and other resources need to reach everyone, especially many young people, who would otherwise miss out on positive reading activities altogether.”
