Public Libraries a Victim of Bushies

Gary Deane found Anna Quindlen’s MSNBC opinion piece on the Bush Administration’s economic policy. It holds up public libraries as the great example of what’s going wrong:

Public libraries have become the new poster children for governmental impecunity. Pick a town, any town, and the library, that great nexus of egalitarian self-improvement, is currently in trouble. Oakland, Calif. Swanson, Neb. York, Maine. Richland, Pa. Closings. Layoffs. Shortened hours. Canceled programs.

The article’s not as much about libraries as it is about general economic problems, but it’s well worth a read.
