Prison Librarian Maintains Calm During Riot

When members of a private security company dropped the ball during a July 2004 prison riot at the Crowley Correctional Center in Olney Springs (CO), the prison librarian, Linda Lyons, maintained her cool, according to this story in the Denver Post. Lyons kept watch over 37 male inmates who played chess and talked while the uprising raged within one building of the library.

A Department of Corrections review of Colorado’s most destructive inmate uprising has found that the official response was dogged by slow decision-making and a lack of communication. A senior department official said CCA officials failed to respond promptly and with enough force, ignored an offer to negotiate, then left the librarian behind as they retreated to safe positions.
