Preservationists Envision Restored D.C. Flagship

Mayor Anthony Williams wants to build a new central library, but several groups are working to save the old one for its architectural significance.

The Martin Luther King Junior Memorial Library at Ninth and G streets, Northwest has perpetually stalled elevators, broken water fountains and a rotting core. Its design though makes it unique for its clean lines, open spaces and transparency. It is the only D.C. building designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
