Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – the second in JK Rowling’s series – was taken out more than half a million times.
But Rowling, who will release the fifth book in the series this summer, is well down the list of most borrowed authors.
She loses out to more prolific authors and comes in in 42nd place overall and 15th among children’s authors.
Most borrowed author for the 17th consecutive year is the late Catherine Cookson.
She fell below three million loans for the first time, but is well ahead of Danielle Steel and Josephine Cox, with just over a million loans each.
