The New York Times reports that the Nobel-winning Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago has died at 87.
Publisher Zeferino Coelho is being quoted on the website of the Portuguese paper Publico as saying that Saramago died at his home in Lanzarote, one of Spain’s Canary Islands.
The outspoken author, whose novels include “Blindness” and “The Cave”, had spent several periods in hospital recently, for what Spanish media said were respiratory problems.
Saramago left Portugal in the early 1990s after the conservative government in power at the time refused to allow his controversial novel “The Gospel According to Jesus Christ” to compete for a European literary prize. More on the late author from the AP.
