PluggedIn: ‘Google Hacking’ Digs Up Sensitive Material

Another one of those Google Hacking stories, This Time From Reuters. The Internet’s most popular search engine can find everything from goldfish-care tips to old classmates in the blink of an eye, but it’s equally adept at finding caches of credit-card numbers and back doors into protected databases.

There’s no such thing as bad PR?

    Blame Microsoft
    I..uh…talked to a friend…who told me about the site that lists these search queries. The amount of sensitive data that was in plain text is really scary. Many of these searches take advantage of a flaw in a Microsoft product, or solutions based on a Microsoft system, such as ASP or Front page. Remind me not to buy anything for a site that uses VP for ASP for its shopping cart.

    Blame Not The Messenger

    This really isn’t Google’s fault. After all, all Google does is crawl websites and index information found there. You wanna blame someone, like was said before me, blame Microsoft for shoddy security. (There is no good reason to store credit card information in plain text.) And blame website managers who don’t go through the bother of locking down such information. You can hide things from Google. It’s not even particularly hard, but you have to do it.

    Basically.
    All you have to do is go to http://johnny.ihackstuff.com/index.php?module=prod reviews and check it out. It has been around for a while and lists all the major vulnerabilities that can be toyed with using Google.

    Anyone irresponsible enough to do business in a manner that leaves themselves wide open to exploits should not be tolerated. Of course then we would have to close Microsoft.
