Here’s the antithesis of what some people think libraries should be…where the phrase GET IT LOUD is trumpeted. The project is designed to promote musical activities for teenagers and get them more familiar with the many advantages offered by their libraries, removing old prejudices and re-inventing libraries as 21st century community centres.
The project includes competitions, on-the-spot giveaways and features live rock gigs in the heart of the traditional library space. More from the Observer.
Will the conductor
at the music hall or the bar band be promoting books and learning?
‘I’ve been in libraries for 20 years and just wanted to push boundaries,’ explains Parsons
So many librarians wanted to be something else.

harry and the potters
This past year, my library system hosted ‘harry and the potters’ a teenage rock band who dress like harry potter year 5 and year 7 and write/sing original songs based on the book series’s content. It was a school night and we easily had over 200 multi-generational patrons. And yes, books and libraries were definitely promoted all throughout the concert and event. They even have a very short song, “this book is so awesome.” What is really awesome is when you can bring multi-generational group together to have fun, support/promote the library and reach out to the community. Many of those who attended had never been to a library program before.
