conservator writes “Front Page Magazine today hosts a debate on the Patriot Act between City Journal Contributing Editor Heather Mac Donald and Santa Cruz Indymedia Editor Joe Williams. The question at issue is ‘Why is the Left waging a ferocious war on the Patriot Act when terrorists are trying to perpetrate more 9/11s on our territory?'”

They’ve got the wrong question – Rightests oppose
As I keep saying, it’s not just “the left” that opposes the PATRIOT Act. According to the April 5th Washington Times, here are just SOME of the prominent conservatives who oppose the PATRIOT Act:
Former Rep. Bob Barr, a Georgia Republican & Clinton impeachment manager.
David A. Keene – American Conservative Union Chairman.
Sen. Larry E. Craig – Republican from Idaho.
Rep. C.L. “Butch” Otter – Republican from Idaho.
Phyllis Schlafly – Eagle Forum President.
Paul M. Weyrich – Free Congress Foundation President
These seem like major movement people to me. While it would be a misstatement to say “The Right” opposes the PATRIOT Act it would also be a misstatement to say “The Right” supports the PATRIOT Act. They’re divided, and rightly so.
As long as we’re framing questions in terms like “Why the leftists love terrorists” or “Why the right loves fascism” we will NEVER have a realistic security policy.
Re:They’ve got the wrong question – Rightests oppo
While you’re making lists, Daniel, perhaps you could take a moment to assemble a list of the left-wing groups that support the Patriot Act. Shouldn’t take much longer than that. The fact that some conservatives oppose the Patriot Act simply means that we don’t have ANSWER organizing our events for us.
Why liberalist resistance?
Perhaps because the lunatic left is aware of a number of issues the reactionary right is wholly blind to.
For one thing, USAPA is a case of doing to yourself what terrorists want to do you. It assists in the implementation of a police state. What the reactionary right does not and will not understand is:
Then to, the reactionary right dogmatically refuses to understand that you can have both security of one’s person and security of civil liberties at one the same time, and that giving up liberty in favour of personal security has only ever left a people at the mercry of their dictator and tyrants.
Aside from which, USAPA proponents seem to think that the survival of each and every individual is some kind of be all end all. An attitude that is downright perverse. The destruction of the WTC was a terrible tragedy, and there is no denying the sorrow and loss of some three thousand families, but despite the disaster, the country survived, and life did and does go on.
I suppose another factor is the wholesale propagandism behind USAPA. I surmise that more and more people are subjecting USAPA to the smell test, and they are finding out that it smells the same way the proclamations about Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Weapons in Iraq do. Just like bullshit. They also recognize that it is one more tool in the arsenal of Bush adminstration erosions:
The difference being that We The People can do something about USAPA, whereas there is nothing the citizenry can do about executive orders.

Yes, well, if insisting on the value of every human life and the safety of America’s cities is “perverse,” then the Patriot Act makes no sense at all.
I have to think that all but a few critics of the Patriot Act would angrily reject Fang’s ant-hill vision for America.
Re:Why liberalist resistance?
There is a difference between insisting on the value of life and trying to create a system where no one is allowed to die. Moreover, totalitarianism does not admit of any respect for one’s basic humanity. With totalitarian regimes, quantity is paramount to quality. Ant-hill America, where everything that is not compulsory is forbidden, is the vision of the Republican National Guard.
Life Savers or Life $avings?
There is a difference between insisting on the value of life and trying to create a system where no one is allowed to die.
Interesting. Some may even say a conservative philosophy. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, The National School Lunch Program, WIC, The Child And Adult Care Food Program, The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)
are other federal life preserving initiatives.
Keeping my 33% would certainly improve the value of this librarian’s life.
