The NewScientist.com news service reports a significant breakthrough in the preservation of classic audio recordings captured on aging vinyl. Researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California have come up with a way to use highly sensitive optical instruments, originally designed to monitor subatomic particles, to clean up and restore old recordings without mechanical contact.
