Paretsky on the Patriot Act

Rob Lopresti writes “Mystery writer Sara Paretsky has some interesting comments on the Patriot Act and related matters. I read it in the British magazine NEW STATESMAN (June 2 2003) but can’t find it in their archives yet. However, you can read it on Paretsky’s own Web Site


The most chilling part consists of her telling that ten years ago she was almost arrested when her name and the words “Killing Orders” were found in a hit man’s belongings. Fortunately the assistant DA recognized that KO was the title of one of her novels. Then she explains what could happen to her today if the same event occurred:


“Under the Patriot Act, the police would not have to explain why they wanted a warrant… They could take me away and make me account for myself without allowing me to talk to a lawyer. They could hold me indefinitely without charging me. They could keep me from telling my family where I was…”
