Anonymous Patron sends “this article fom JS Online about parents who want to remove the book , The Perks of Being a Wallflower from their child’s Arrowhead (WI) school. The parents say that the book appeals to the “prurient interest of minors.” The school is reviewing the book. After this title, the complainants have a list of other books they find objectionable, including Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ Chronicle of a Death Foretold.
For a different take on Perks, NPR had a story yesterday about books to help kids and teens through tough times and crisis, in which the book was highly praised. (Audio download)”
OK, I need to read some of these again
I can understand getting upset about a school-recommended book that includes sex (at least, anything that went beyond the “Suzie and me did ‘it’ behind the gym at the dance last night” level of detail), but I don’t recall anything in Chronicle of a Death Foretold that could be that bad. Of course, we don’t want our children to read about suicide! That’s definitely not a family value and nobody around here would ever feel like doing that!
How about some parents trying to ban
those “textbooks” coming out of the South which allude to marriage only being between a man and a woman and contain other such “information.” When are parents going to speak up about THAT!?
Re:How about some parents trying to ban
What do you mean allude. The textbooks explicitly say: when a man and woman marry. And other phrases to that effect.
Re:How about some parents trying to ban
Yes, please, do that, I beg of you, go ahead. Ignore what happened last week entirely and go ahead. We’re not quite at filibuster proof in the Senate and we’re going to need a stronger majority in the House so please, please, do exactly that.
