Page of LAC elinks gets major upgrade

Terry Ballard writes “The page Library of American Civilization titles available free on the Web, http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x1849.xml , has just undergone a revision that nearly tripled the number of entries. The page, begun in 2000, helps libraries who own this set of 19th century American studies books on microfiche redirect their patrons to a more usable format. The micro format, about the size of a credit card, has long been a stress point in libraries, forcing many of them to buy special lenses for their microform readers just to handle the LAC titles.

The revision reflects more than 600 new titles added to the list as a result of the Google Books Project. Terry Ballard, Automation Librarian at Quinnipiac University’s Arnold Bernhard Library, reports that the search of Google Books turned up fewer than 50 matches last August, so the current result appears to reflect a ramping-up of the Google project. “In six years of searching, we could only find 10 per cent of the titles online. We now have 25 per cent of our collection linked.””
