PA Strike Threat Continues as Classes Begin Next Week

AshtabulaGuy writes “The contract dispute in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (“SSHE”) between management and the faculty (including librarians) represented by the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (“APSCUF”) may come to a head next week.
APSCUF has stated on its negotiations blog its intention to possibly set a strike deadline on January 16th. According to the Patriot-News, state-wide APSCUF president William Fulmer stated that a strike deadline may be set without informing management. In the article Fulmer is quoted as stating, “No sense in giving aid and comfort to the enemy,” Fulmer said. Fulmer did say that students would be given some notice.

SSHE Chancellor Judy Hample notes on SSHE’s site, as did APSCUF’s Fulmer in the Patriot-News, that classes will indeed start on January 12th. The Washington Observer-Reporter notes that contingency plans are in place at all fourteen SSHE universities in the event of a “job action”. In an FAQ, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania notes that an attempt will be made to continue university operations as normal notwithstanding the strike.
Due to the faculty’s fall semester strike authorization vote, action can be taken by APSCUF at any time. Some sort of action may occur on January 16th at the meeting of APSCUF’s state-level leadership. Students at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania have shown some fear as to what may come, though.
Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester Universities of Pennsylvania make up SSHE.”
