Over one lakh books burnt in Imphal library

Kathleen de la Pena McCook writes “NDTV India reports Over one lakh books burnt in Imphal library. Over 1,45,000 books have been burnt down at the Central Library in Imphal by an organisation called MEELAL. They’ve been agitating for the implementation of Meitei as the official language of the state.
MEELAL has been calling for the destruction of all written material, which is not written in Meitei. Manipur switched to the Bengali script in the 18th century.

Meetei-Mayek is the script which was used to write Meeteilon (Manipuri) till the 18th century. The script nearly became extinct as a result of a mass burning of all books in Meeteilon ordered by Ningthau Pamheiba who ruled Manipur in the 18th century.”

Someone else passed along a BBC Story as well.
