Ottawa Citizen editorial on filtering issue

Gary Deane noticed this Ottawa Citizen editorial on filtering issue in which they say The library doesn’t put Hustler magazine on its shelves. City bylaws don’t allow children to view it in stores. Why then would it let nine-year-old boys access that kind of material using a computer? They go on to say:

“there must be some qualitative judgments about what is provided to the public, at taxpayers’ expense, and what is not. The librarian edits in somewhat the same way a newspaper or magazine editor does: What has value? What is entertaining? What do you need to know? What are the promising and great works of literature?


Our library will be judged based upon what value it brings to the city. If the library becomes the place where people go to surf the Internet for pornography, its value will be greatly diminished.“
