Original manuscript of AA’s “Big Book” on auction block

ffirehorse writes “The New York Times reports that the original manuscript of Bill Wilson’s master copy of the working draft of ‘Alcoholics Anonymous,’ otherwise known as the Big Book, is in the hands of Sotheby’s, which plans to sell it to the proverbial highest bidder (in this case, the value is set at between $300-500k). The relevant point is whether the manuscript is something that should be put on the auction block or should be donated to an archive for use by researchers and scholars and other interested folks. One researcher says, ‘It’s the most important piece of A.A. history to be sold, ever. I think someone should buy it and give it back to A.A. and let researchers like myself look at it. I don’t want someone to buy it and sell each individual page.’ Article at the New York Times. Registration required. Or not–go Bugmenot.com to gain access without registering.”
