Kathleen writes Word of Mouth, a loose alliance of women’s authors, has written Oprah Winfrey begging her to resume picking new novels for members of her popular book club.
Oprah stopped reviewing contemporary books after the Jonathan Franzen dustup back in 2001 when Franzen stated,”I feel like I’m solidly in the high art literary tradition, but I like to read entertaining books and this maybe helps bridge that gap, but it also heightens these feelings of being misunderstood.” In a NYTimes editorial Verlyn Klinkenborg observed,”The words “high art literary tradition” got a lot of play — “a phrase he’ll ironically be linked with forever” (30 October 2001).
Oprah’s Book Club now reads classics.
