Open Source Beer

Pete writes “Open source isn’t just for digital anymore as this BBC story “The Danes love their beer, but increasingly they are looking beyond the old Danish standby, Carlsberg, to quench their thirst.

Students from the Information Technology University in Copenhagen are trying to help by releasing what they are calling the world’s first open source beer recipe.

Mr Nielsen asked his students to think about applying open source ideas to the non-digital world.

“Why not take those ideas back to the old world, and try to apply them to other things as well?” asks Nielsen.””

    Hey… beer man…
    If Budweiser is the Windows XP of beers, then is Coors the Mac OS X of frosty brew? Could you consider Samuel Adams to be the equivalent to Red Hat Enterprise Linux? One thing’s for sure – Milwaukee’s Best Light is the Windows ME of beers.

    Free as in software
    As someone who has made my own beer, I would have to say that beer is already open source. Although I haven’t encountered a GNU license on a recipe yet, you can use existing recipes or make and share your own improvements. There are even instances of reverse engineering — I’ve attempted “clone brews” of some of my favorite English ales, things like Fuller’s ESB and Moreland’s Old Speckled Hen.
