Ontario Gideons avoid school Bible ban

One From The St Thomas Journal reports Thames Valley school trustees voted 5-4 Tuesday to defeat a resolution which could have led to a ban on distribution of religious texts through schools.
But they also could revisit the issue as soon as two weeks’ time, when minutes from last night’s committee of the whole meeting are reviewed by trustees as they sit in a regular board meeting.

    Parents are informed of the Gideons visit ahead of time and allowed to have their children “opt out” of the presentation. I’m not sure if this is a board wide policy or if it varies school to school.

    Of course, last year, we had the big bruhaha with our principal and not allowing Christmas stuff, but right after the new year, the Gideons came for a visit. I thought that was a little two-faced.

    Interesting that the Gideons are allowed in but I’ve never seen any other religious groups allowed in to proselytise.

    I guess that is how you would have to do it… either allow all religious groups in (and that would include Wiccan and Scientologists) or allow no religious groups in.
