One Book Community-Wide Reading Programs Directory

The library where I work has just launched its third year of “Tale of Two Cities,” a community-wide program in which people are urged to read the same book and engage in discussions. It made me wonder how widespread such programs are, and I found this directory from the Library of Congress Center for the Book. While many of the titles include familiar classics (“To Kill A Mockingbird” and “Huckelberry Finn”), there are some interesting choices. For intstance, I wonder how much community involvement Ithaca, NY got with their 2003 selection, “Antigone.”

    In 2003, over 15,000 took part in the first adventure when we read Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, a tale of treachery and thrills with key scenes set in Bristol docks. For 2004, we are reading John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids, a chilling fantasy of mysterious lights in the sky, mass blindness, a civilisation on the brink of collapse and carnivorous walking plants. Once again books will be available in schools, libraries, businesses; Creative Bristol has 2,000 to give away; and there are some fantastic competitions and special events.

    The Great Reading Adventure is part of Creative Bristol – the initiative delivering Bristol’s 2008 capital of culture bid projects.
