Fang-Face writes “You Say Scrotum, I Say Hoo-Ha, by Susie Bright, takes a look at the literary lynching of The Higher Power of Lucky. In it, she alleges that the core of the movement is ultra-conservativism . . .
Ms. Nilsson isn’t just a “teacher,” she’s a leader from the Durango Christian Science Church. When the media reports on issues of language or sexual attitudes and customs, it’s incumbent on them to inquire about their informant’s religious background and how it affects their decision-making. Who cares what Dana Nilsson thinks about librarianship, if her first priority is her Scriptural views of morality?
. . . and that the librarians associated with it are not at all representative of the field at large. She also places this incident in its socio-cultural context.”
A call to self inventory .
in it, she alleges that the core of the movement is ultra-conservativism (emphasis mine) . .
But you know better than to buy into this allegation? I needn’t refresh your memory with tit-for-tat examples of ultra liberal sensiblilites being offended. So why not endeavor today to have an honest conversation with yourself? Seriously. If your calling is “censorship” then why not begin to appraise it fairly. All sides. Across the board without projecting your own biases with the peppering of Rethuglian pejorative when posting. What logician needs this?
My suggestion. Muster the mettle to share with LISNews readers examples of ultra-liberalism and its attempt to peck away at the First Amendment. Maybe focus on the assault of political correctness, which owes its popularity to the concept of “offense”. Examples are replete, though it may require stepping into new frontiers though you may discover a break from TruthOut refreshing. If needed, I’d be happy to forward stories and ideas. A partnership perhaps? An opportunity that would allow you to demonstrate to our friends around here that you are not a political shill, but the even-handed, objective, apolitical LISNews bugler of which you remind us regularly.
Whatchya say?
And another thing…
SCROTUM SCROTUM SCROTUM SCROTUM SCROTUM!
(Just doing my part to destroy traditional American values and morality. You’re welcome.)
Re:A call to self inventory
A partnership with someone who sees everything as black or white and complex issues as one sided? Yeah, right.
Re:A call to self inventory
First of all, the Christian Science Church is not exactly a right wing organization. Secondly, Ms. Nilsson did not actually ban the book from her library. She only criticized it on a listserv. According to Associated Press:
“Even Nilsson told the AP that she is carrying it, although she questions whether it was worthy of a Newbery. Nilsson also said that while one some of those who contacted her had decided not to select the book, it was for other reasons, such as unhappiness with the quality of the writing or the believability of the characters.” see: http://theedge.bostonherald.com/bookNews/view.bg?a rticleid=184629&format=&page=2
So it seems to me like a kind of censorship to direct all of this vitriol toward Ms. Nilsson because of some comments she made about a particular, not because of any action she took on it. Now we have someone suggesting her religious background needs to be scrutinized, like she cannot be a professional librarian if she has any kind of religious beliefs.
