Ohio Money Madness

AshtabulaGuy writes In a story from the UK Guardian that originated from the US Associated Press, the following amazing factoids were reported:

“Ohio’s public libraries have generally been treated quite well by the state. In 2003, the most recent federal data available, Ohio received the most overall library funding at $56.85 per person, compared with a national average of $30.97.

“The libraries in Ohio also had the nation’s most visits (6.9 for every one of the state’s 11 million people) and circulate the most items (14.63 per capita.) “

The present draft of the Ohio budget bill as passed by the Ohio House is available online but weighs in at almost eight megabytes in size. The most recent version of the bill analysis when the bill was reported out of committee is also available online but is again severely huge. The budget that left the Ohio House maintained the 5% budget cut to Ohio libraries proposed by Governor Bob Taft.

The budget draft that left the Ohio House is now before the Ohio Senate. Final action must occur on the budget by June 30 as the budget year begins July 1. The commencement date of Ohio’s budget year cannot constitutionally be waived so final action in this matter will come soon.”
