White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt announced to the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research on Friday that President Obama intended to turn over development of a national Internet ID to the Commerce Department.
Pursuant to the Orwellian-sounding National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which the administration is currently writing, Commerce will create a program to provide and administer an allegedly voluntary interoperable verified online IDs.
Yes it does. So?
As long as it is not compulsory to use it whats the problem?
It’s the same with any other system that any company uses, if you want the convienience of not having to remember so many id’s and passwords then you might want to use it.
Oooh, but then they’ll know all my data. So they won’t if you are using Wallmart or Amazon’s systems? Of course they will.
There are certainly some services (personally governmental/local council) where an official ID would be useful. Being able to vote etc online would be interesting, but theres no way I’d use it for Ebay, or here or any of the personal interest websites (eg where I go to slag off idiots on tv). But then if I don’t have to why would I be worried?
As long as it isn’t going to
As long as it isn’t going to violate any privacy rules I don’t mind it, but I would hate to find out the government is using this to spy on our interests and online behavior. If this would be the case I am afraid Obama will have his image ruined even more. I wouldn’t be surprised though, just like a good friend of mine, Aaron DelSignore once said, there are few politicians out there worth trusted.
