NYC Elementary Schools to Lose Librarians

New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein offered a new way of divvying up school dollars, but parents and educators say his changes are unfair and illogical, in this story from NY Newsday.

Elementary schools, for example, will be partly funded for a teachers’ union representative but not for a librarian, assistant principal or guidance counselor. Middle schools will get dollars for a guidance counselor, but not for an assistant principal.

(Ed: I can’t think of any positions more critical than a librarian for elementary school students, and an assistant principal for middle school students (I can envision the kids lined up outside an empty office, waiting for a non-existent AP to either encourage them or straighten them out).
