News from the UK: Testing times for librarians

With greater diversity than ever in British universities, librarians are struggling to meet the needs of some overseas students

Can you tell me the web address for Japanese theses on my subject? Get me satellite maps of Afghanistan? And put that Koran on a higher shelf?

The growing number and diversity of international students in the UK means that such demands are increasingly common in university libraries. But librarians may struggle to provide the exclusive services that some overseas students need, given that budgets are often static or declining. So concludes a study by the Society of College, National and University Libraries (Sconul), reported in Times Higher Education (May 29).

The study, Library Services for International Students, says that overseas students often need more help in libraries because of issues such as culture, language, varying levels of IT literacy and library experience.
