New law could cost U.S. libraries thousands or worse, ban children

Coshocton Tribune – Coshocton,OH: Coshocton Public Library Children’s Librarian Diane Jones is watching and waiting. Over the next year it will be determined if all of the library’s children’s books will need to be tested for lead, if children 12 and under will have to be banned or, best case scenario, neither has to happen.

    So much confusion
    This law has created so much confusion. I think it has been decided that all books printed after 1985 are safe from testing unless they contain non-booklike materials such as fabrics or plastics. All children’s (under 12) furniture or toys will still need to be tested though.

    If you have children
    If you have children you have to throw away all books pre-1985 that you have at home. The law does not just apply to selling items. If libraries have to test pre-1985 books then you have to test pre-1985 books at home if you have kids. if you don’t the CPSC will mark your house as a hazardous material area and you children will be taken by the government.

    confusion
    The way I heard it most of CPSC simply went into stay for one year until it was sorted out, with the pre-1985 direction given for that year, then we are back to the courts sorting out vaguely written law, or libraries getting an exemption.
