With great excitement, we are pleased to present the inaugural issue of a new journal focused on the issues of library management and administration. Library Management Today is an online publication with practical articles for today’s library manager. We are very fortunate to have as the executive editor of our new publication the very talented Colette Meehan. We invite your comments. We invite you to submit articles and news about your library.
Our first issue brings you a wide range of excellent articles written by respected library leaders from throughout the country. We are also pleased to include an audio interview with Roberta Stevens, who became the president of the American Library Association earlier this week in Washington, D.C. It is our hope that you will enjoy this first issue, and that you will look forward to receiving and reading future issues in the months ahead.

Can you really call this a journal?
Maybe it will get better, but this seems more like a marketing vehicle than a journal – “newsletter” is probably a more apt description. I’m not even sure the people who are writing the articles have the experience and credentials to be giving out advice. The article about staff retreats – you really have to question this advice when the director just springs the retreat on the staff with no advance notice. A good manager would first involve the staff in planning the retreat, inviting them to identify the goals of the retreat, what topics will be covered, what the outcomes are – and most importantly – what will happen as a result of the retreat. So my two cents is, read this stuff at your own risk.
