New From Google: Google Suggest

Google has a new product, Google Suggest out in Beta. There’s an FAQ that describes this new service: “As you type into the search box, Google Suggest guesses what you’re typing and offers suggestions in real time. Google Suggest might offer suggestions that you will find novel or intriguing. ”

Me, I just want an answer to a question most of the time, this seems like a nifty idea to reach that goal.

Your browser must be Internet Explorer 6.0 (or newer), Netscape 7.1 (or newer), Mozilla 1.4 (or newer), Firefox 0.8 (or newer), Opera 7.54 (or newer), or Safari 1.2.2 (or newer). You’ll also need to have both JavaScript and cookies enabled.

    The power of (Google) Suggestion
    What a wonderful tool! After having typed but a few characters google gladly gives me a drop-down menu of everything it thinks I mean! For those users who are uncertain of just what they mean, this is a superb resource for being led by the nose. O, (big) brother, where art thou? Why, residing in google suggest, of course! In all seriousness, it seems to work fairly well, but how often does one start typing a query without some idea of where one is going? Debatably useful.

    For writer’s block
    A test run of Google Suggest made me think it might be a good kick in the pants for a writer stuck on where to go with a fictional story.

    Forgive what seems like a catty question, but I am confused as to how this would solve writer’s block. Perhaps I am a bit dense, but could you more fully explain your “good kick in the pants?” Lord knows I could use one in my writing, as late.

    No formula per se, just the possibility of free-associating with completely varied concepts so that a story that’s stuck can continue to flow in a different direction. Writing a dead-end story about Christmas? Maybe it should really be about Christina Aguillera…
